Jackson
Jackson, the state capital, is a
rapidly growing urban center situated in the heart of the Sunbelt. In addition
to serving as the political center, Jackson is also the social and cultural
capital of the state.
The Mississippi Arts Center, in
downtown Jackson, was opened to the public in 1978. Encompassed in this
contemporary facility is the Mississippi Museum of Art, the Russell C. Davis
Planetarium, and the City Auditorium for the performing arts, site of the
International Ballet Competition in 1979, 1982, 1986, 1990, and 1994, the only
such competitions held in the United States. Local audiences see regular
performances by Ballet Magnificat and the Atlanta Ballet. The Jackson Symphony
Orchestra and the Mississippi Opera provide different dimensions of
entertainment while visiting and local stage groups such as New Stage Theatre
perform classical and modern plays for theatre aficionados.
For those who enjoy rock and country and
Western music, the ten thousand seat Mississippi Coliseum has a frequent
schedule of big name entertainment groups. Jackson and Mississippi offer many
opportunities for outdoor recreation. Located just fifteen minutes north of the
Medical Center, a thirty thousand acre reservoir has excellent facilities for
boating, sailing and fishing. Due to the excellent climate, the Jackson Yacht
Club conducts multi-class sail boat races on the reservoir year-round. Also,
there are dozens of accessible state parks where campers can enjoy canoeing,
boating and hiking. The South with its mild winters is ideal for athletic
pastimes. Tennis, golf and racquetball facilities are all located near the
Medical Center campus. A local health club provides an Olympic swimming pool,
aerobic classes, Nautilus machines, racquet sports and an outdoor jogging
trail. For those interested in team sports, city softball leagues provide an
opportunity for residents and staff to socialize and compete as a unit in an
organized well- run system. A modern YMCA is only minutes from the complex and
offers recreational facilities for both males and females.
With the temperate climate, outdoor
recreation is possible all year. Smith-Wills Baseball Stadium is the site
of AA baseball. For college football enthusiasts, the Mississippi Memorial
Stadium, just across the street from the Medical Center campus, attracts some
of the nation's greatest teams. Mississippi State, Ole Miss, and Jackson State
University all play first-rate football schedules. Alabama, Grambling,
Tennessee and LSU have all played recently in Jackson.
The distinctive Southern life style,
both present day and antebellum, is a cultural and historical experience which
makes a lasting impression on those who visit the historic landmarks. The
mansions of Natchez, the Natchez Trace, Vicksburg National Military Park and
Mynelle Gardens in Jackson evoke strong sentiments of generations past. Natchez
and close by Vicksburg also offer the entertainment and glitter of casino
gambling. The Mississippi Gulf Coast and barrier islands are just two and a
half hours away, easily accessible for a weekend of beach fun, deep sea fishing
or casino gambling. Bourbon Street, Fat City, the Garden District and the
Superdome of New Orleans are just a quick three-hour trip away directly south
on I-55. Finally, such events as The Delta Blues Festival, Jubilee Jam and the
Red Beans and Rice Festival are held annually in Mississippi.
